Location
This trail is located in the south of Snowdonia National Park and is considered to be one of the best trails in Britain, for cyclists as well as walkers.
The trail stretches for nine miles between Dolgellau (SH 725 175) and Barmouth (SH 615 155) and can be joined at several points, including Morfa Mawddach and Penmaenpool (see map).
We recommend that visitors who are wheelchair users don't begin the Mawddach Trail at Dolgellau as parts of this section of the trail are very steep. Instead, we suggest that you join the trail from the Snowdonia National Park Authority car park near Pont y Wernddu (Wernddu Bridge) - SH 715 183 (see map).
Between Dolgellau and Morfa Mawddach, the trail is owned by the National Park Authority and for most of its length reaches a 3 metre width.
This trail follows the beautiful Mawddach estuary, giving visitors the chance to experience some of Snowdonia’s splendour, striking scenery and beautiful wildlife. The Mawddach Trail really does show Snowdonia at its best.
Care should be taken when passing over two narrow footbridges, around 20 metres long, after Pont y Wernddu (in the Dolgellau direction), and there is a steep ramp up to the first bridge which is not suitable for wheelchairs. It is recommended that wheelchair users begin the trail from the Snowdonia National Park Authority car park near Pont y Wernddu (SH SH 715 183). Also, look out for any sand blown onto the path after passing over Barmouth Bridge, although the wooden bridge itself is flat and wide.
The Mawddach Trail is clearly marked and can be easily followed.
