Celf Eden ‘09
In June 2009, a brand new art festival, Celf Eden, was held at Plas Tan y Bwlch. This was a new event to unite artists, minority languages and culture and a unique opportunity to be inspired by the spirit and environment of Snowdonia through a variety of artistic approaches, organized by Rhian Haf, Shari Llewelyn and Edward Elias. Celf Eden was influenced by the international arts week, Arteden in Lonjer, the Slovenian area of Italy which has hosted a number of artists from Wales and mainland Europe since its instigation in 2003.
The main focus of Celf Eden were the 8 resident artists, who created new work at Plas Tan y Bwlch, and a variety of community activities were organised, in the company of artists, poets, storytellers and musician, to add to the spirit of the festival.
Bwrlwm Eryri contributed to the festival by organizing a series of community arts activities with the artist, Tim Pugh, the rapper and beat-boxer, Ed Holden, the chief poet, Ifor ap Glyn and the storyteller, Cath Aran, with various local schools and community groups – including groups of Welsh learners, Y Felin Sgwrsio and Datod Tafod, the Waunfawr Nature Watch group and the Antur Waunfawr workers.
Environmental Art Workshops
The environmental artist, Tim Pugh, is inspired by shapes and textures seen in the natural world and incorporated these into his artworks. He uses materials such as leaves, flowers, twigs, grass, stones, shells and snow to create art installations in natural environments – in forests , on beaches or on grass.
Tim Pugh was a residential artist in Plas Tan y Bwlch during November 2009, and seven local primary schools visited the Plas to see Tim working and to participate in his workshops.
Ancient Arts Workshops
Fifteen students, studying in the second year of the Bangor University B.Ed course, were welcomed to Plas Tan y Bwlch on November 12th, to participate in a workshop by Ancient Arts, a company based in Rowen, Conwy. The company specialises in Reconstructional and Experimental Archaeology and students were given the opportunity to create prehistoric appliances, such hammers and knives, using natural materials: flint stones, yew fibres and wood and to watch an exhibition of prehistoric cooking processes.
