This site is based on a book published in 1996 by the Snowdonia National Park Authority (ISBN 0 948 16107 8) for the occasion of the National Parks Conference "Caught in the Act", held that year in Llandudno. The book is long out of print but the original text and layout can now be seen in the e-book on this site. There have been new discoveries and new interpretations, some of which are incorporated into the revised text on this site. The accompanying interactive map shows the location of each photograph and can be used to access the relevant text directly.
Most of the photographs are from the archive of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, Plas Crug, Aberystwyth SY23 1NJ. A number of the photographs were commissioned specifically for the book. The online catalogue for the National Monuments Record of Wales (NMRW), which has site records, descriptions and a selection of aerial photographs, can be accessed at www.coflein.gov.uk.
Additional photographs are from the extensive archive of the Cambridge University Collection of Air Photos (CUCAP), now housed in the Unit for Landscape Modelling, Sir William Hardy Building, Tennis Court Road, Cambridge CB2 1QB. These photographs are of particular historical value and a number of sites were first recorded as a result of research for the book. There is now an online catalogue of the collection at www.venus.uflm.cam.ac.uk.
